The word "liberal" has really taken on a weird meaning in North America in the past decade or so. Consulting m-w.com, here are a few definitions which seem to fit:
"marked by generosity" "broad-minded" "not bound by authoritarianism, orthodoxy, or traditional forms"
The opposite of "liberal" appears to be "conservative" -- so, let's flip the definitions around and see if you'd enjoy these words being used to describe you:
"marked by greed" "closed-minded" "bound by authortarianism, orthodoxy and traditional forms"
Wow... seriously? You want that? I don't know anyone who would. Therefore, "liberal" can't be a put-down; it should be a compliment.

Seriously, words are used to define one's actions. By re-defining the word, does not change the persons actions.
